Candlewick Bedspreads

Anyone who appreciates antique or vintage style home dcor will love the look of a candlewick bedspread. Even if the bedspread is not a genuine antique, the old fashioned appeal in its design can add a heartwarming touch to a vintage style bedroom. According to the antique auction marketplace Old and Sold, candlewick bedspreads originated well over 100 years ago in England and Scotland. The name evolved from the embroidery patterns which were constructed from the same coarse, white yarn used to make homemade candle wicks.

Where to Buy

You can buy new and vintage candlewick bedspreads online at the following places. The first two retailers listed offer new bedspreads that feature traditional candlewick designs. The last two stores are located on eBay and offer vintage or antique candlewick bedspreads.

  • A Touch of Class - This upscale home dcor retailer offers two styles of traditional candlewick bedspreads, the John Adams design and the Spirit of America design. Each bedspread features cotton embroidering with a large medallion in the center surrounded by other intricate designs and fringe around the edges.
  • Linen Source - Here you can find two lovely candlewick bedspread designs in the store's chenille bedspread category. The first design, called Martha's Choice, is fashioned after the original design that George Washington chose for his bride. The second design, called New England Tradition, features floral vines that surround a star-shaped medallion and knotted fringe around the edges of the spread.
  • Judy Chenilles Linens Boutique - This seller runs an eBay store and offers vintage candlewick bedspreads made in the early 20th century, during the 1920's and 1930's. Some of her bedspreads are listed as museum quality, so if you are interested in purchasing an antique bedspread, this is a good place to start.
  • The Antique Linen Cupboard - This is another eBay store where you can often find vintage candlewick bedspreads from the United Kingdom. The seller ships worldwide - just remember to factor in the cost of shipping before you decide to bid on or buy one of these bedspreads.

Candlewick Patterns

One of the most common patterns in these bedspreads is a large central medallion surrounded by some other type of design, which is often geometric or floral. The American eagle was a common pattern seen in candlewick bedspreads during the colonial era in the U.S.

The oldest known patterns often depict the English and Scottish countryside, where this style of bedspread first originated. Some patterns are more free-flowing, with natural motifs such as flowers, vines, leaves, baskets, trees and birds. Patterns were sometimes handed down from mothers to daughters and given names that would aptly describe each motif. The edges of the bedspread are commonly finished with some type of decorative fringe.

The Embroidery Process

Before industrial machines were made that could produce this type of stitching, the embroidery on a candlewick bedspread involved painstaking hours of hand tuffting or knotting candlewick yarn on a muslin fabric. Colonial and French knots were used, as were stem, satin and straight stitches. The stitches are raised by using a small stick or similar tool to loop the yarn over while making each knot. The end result is an elegant, textured pattern that is either the same color as the base fabric or a slightly lighter color. Because of the time and talent it took to create the intricate patterns, candlewick bedspreads were often given as a wedding gift to the bride.

Other Resources for Antique Bedspreads

In addition to the eBay stores previously mentioned, other resources you can try to find antique candlewick bedspreads include Ruby Lane and Cynthia's Linen Closet. Pay careful attention to chenille style bedspreads with hand embroidery, as these types of bedspreads sometimes have the candlewick patterns, without being labeled as a candlewick bedspread. You may also find antique or vintage bedspreads at an estate sale.

Add a Touch of Elegance to Your Bedroom

It's easy to create an elegant look in your bedroom when you add a candlewick bedspread to the room's dcor. You will need little else, if anything, on top of your bed because these classic bedspreads are true works of art.

SunScreen Smarts!

Summer is officially here, and you are probably enjoying the longer days. But all that extra sunlight means you need to be diligent about applying sunscreen. Most doctors and researchers that specialize in skin cancers agree that most damage happens before you reach adulthood. When you are young, you spend much more time outdoors but you also tend to think less about the consequences of being in the sun sans SPF. So protect your children, and get them in the habit of applying sunscreen at an early age. They will thank you later in life!

1. Put enough on. The recommended application for adequate protection is 35 to 40ml per person per application. How much is this? Think about a shotglass full, or a handful.
2. Budget brands are just as effective as the more expensive brands. It's okay to go with the Pharmacy brand!
3. Sunscreen should be applied to clean, dry skin 30 minutes before exposure to the sun which allows it time to absorb properly.
4. Take time out in the shade between 11 am and 3 pm when them sun is strongest, but still apply sun screen because sand, concrete and water can reflect harmful rays. Same goes for car rides, the sun is coming in through your windows!
5. Reapply. Perspiration, exercise, swimming and towel-drying removes sun creams from the skin so you should reapply after taking part in any of these activities, even if the product claims to be waterproof. You should also reapply ever 45-60 minutes, otherwise you are still at risk for a burn. If you hate reapplying, look into the new continuous spray versions that make applying sunscreen a breeze.
6. Everyday use of sun lotions on your face and back of the hands will limit the chances of developing dry leathery skin, wrinkles, other signs of premature aging and skin cancer. Most moisturizers can be found with a built-in SPF factor, look for something with at least SPF 15. After applying to your face, rub the rest into your hands for instant moisturization and sun protection.
7. When you are laying out, try to cover up in the sun with loose cotton clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses with UV protection.
8. Use a "broad spectrum" sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 15 to protect against harmful UVA and UVB rays. The FDA has recently allowed the use of new ingredients in sunscreen that have been used in Europe for years that provide great broad spectrum protection.
9. Overcast weather still requires sunscreen in summer because 80 per cent of ultra-violet radiation is still present on cloudy days. Some companies have started producing daily body lotions with spf 15 built-in so that you can apply sunscreen without even thinking about it.
10. Children and babies need greater protection so use specially formulated kids ranges with gentler ingredients and higher SPFs.

Kids' Bath Towels

The sky is the limit when it comes to kids' bath towel choices. Your child can find a towel with her favorite cartoon character that makes the search for the ideal towel fun and exciting.

Hooded Towels

One of the most popular designs today for kids' towels is the hooded bath towel. These towels have been very popular for infants because the hood helps keep the baby warm while you wrap the rest of the towel around her body. However, hooded towels are not just for babies.

You can find a great selection of hooded towels designed for bigger kids. These terry cloth towels are soft and plush. You can find brightly colored towels in many different designs, such as mythical creatures, monsters, farm animals, wild animals, sea creatures and more.

Just don't be surprised if your child gets somewhat attached to her favorite hooded towel. She may use her towel as a costume or cuddle up with it while watching television.

Personalized Towels

Along with hooded towels, children love personalized towels. Anytime you can put a child's name on something, it makes that object special to the child. Who wouldn't want to use a bath towel with their name written on it? Now if they would only invent personalized soap, maybe it wouldn't be such a battle to actually get a child clean.

You can find personalized bath towels with fun patterns such as pirate ships, jungle animals, flowers, sports items, hearts and more. You can also have your child's name added on some hooded towels. In addition to personalized towels, you can have your child's initials placed on a monogrammed bath towel.

Bath Towel Sets

A great way to buy bath towels for kids is to buy a bath towel set. Most bath towel sets include a bath towel, hand towel and washcloth, although some towel sets only include the bath towel and a washcloth. At The Company Store, you can buy a bath towel set that includes a water resistant toiletry bag.

Disney Bath Towels

If your child is a big Disney fan, you can find bath towels with Disney characters on them. At Amazon, you can find many Disney character kids' towels including:

  • Winnie the Pooh
  • Mickey Mouse Clubhouse
  • Cinderella
  • Ariel (The Little Mermaid)

Macy's also carries Disney hooded towels with characters from Toy Story, Cars and the Disney princesses.

Oversized Towels

Oversized bath towels for kids are not that easy to find. You can use a kids' beach towel as an oversized bath towel if you are unable to find one.

One place where you can find oversized bath towels for kids is the Colorful Childhood Store. These large, plush, hooded towels are big enough to use as beach towels. They were designed by a mom from Virginia named Wendy Carter. Carter was inspired to design these towels because of her oldest daughter's attachment to her beloved "ducky" hooded towel, which she had received on her first birthday. The little girl would not get out of the bath without this special towel. Mom Wendy has designed a total of 15 different kids' towels which will work for kids up to eight years old.

Organic Cotton and Bamboo Bath Towels

Most kids' bath towels are made of 100% cotton terry cloth. If your child has sensitive skin or allergies, you should consider buying bath towels made from organic cotton or bamboo. Organic cotton is guaranteed to be free of chemicals, pesticides and other toxins because it is grown by environmentally friendly standards. Bamboo is naturally antimicrobial and hypoallergenic. Bath towels made from bamboo fiber are naturally odor resistant and a great choice for those with sensitive skin. You can find organic cotton and bamboo kids' towels at Green and More and Toys R Us.

You can find bath towels and bath towel sets for kids at the following online retailers:

Make bath time more fun with plush, cozy, colorful kids' bath towels. With so many styles to choose from, you are sure to find a towel your child will love.

California King Duvet Cover

A convenient way to change the look of a California king bed is with a duvet cover. Bedding this size can sometimes be difficult to find, which makes duvet covers a great option.

A Duvet Cover Defined

A duvet cover is basically like a large pillow sham. Instead of being a decorative cover for a pillow, it is a decorative cover for a comforter. Since the duvet cover is just a casing, it is usually less expensive than a comforter. Duvet covers are also easier to store than a comforter since they are less bulky.

Understanding Difference Between King and California King

Most standard size bedding, such as twin, full and queen are universal; however, there are two types of king size bedding. Standard king, also known as Eastern king, has a mattress dimension of 76" by 80". Each person who sleeps on a standard king size bed has 38" of personal space.

A California King has a mattress dimension of 72" by 84", which is narrower but longer than standard king size beds. These beds are ideal for tall people, especially those over six feet tall, but each person only has 36" of personal space. California King beds are the longest beds on the market, being four inches longer than a twin extra long or a standard king. While this is good news for tall people, there are possible drawbacks. California king beds may not fit well in smaller bedrooms. When moving, it can be difficult to get the long mattresses around tight corners.

The Advantages of California King Duvet Covers

Many manufacturers make comforters in California king size; however, selection is usually more limited than it is for standard king size. If you want the option of having different looks for different seasons, instead of buying several comforters that will take up a lot of storage space, consider purchasing a duvet cover. You can get even more for your money if you purchase a reversible duvet cover. All you have to do is flip it over for a new look that goes with your other furnishings. This saves you the hassle of changing sheet sets, bed skirts and window treatments to coordinate with the duvet cover.

Duvet Cover Features

Duvet covers are sewn on three sides with the bottom usually left open so that you can slide the comforter into the casing. The open side closes with buttons, zippers or ties.

California King duvet covers vary in exact sizes by a few inches. When looking for a duvet cover, it is a good idea to measure or know the exact dimensions of your California king comforter. This will help ensure you buy a duvet that's large enough to adequately cover your comforter.

Some duvet covers are sold as complete bedding ensembles, with two or four pillow shams, bed skirt, sheet set and decorative throw pillows. Bedding ensembles vary as well, according to what's included in each set. Make sure you read the product description carefully to see what bedding pieces are included.

Materials

California king duvet covers are available in a variety of fabrics such as:

  • Bamboo fiber
  • Blends
  • Cotton
  • Egyptian cotton
  • Flannel
  • Micro suede
  • Polyester
  • Silk
  • Satin

Whatever your favorite bedding fabric happens to be, you should be able to find a California king duvet in the fabric of your choice. These duvets are also available in just about any print pattern or solid color.

Where to Buy

You can find duvet covers in California king size at these online retailers:

Deciding What You Want

Whether you opt for a single duvet cover, a reversible one or several covers, you'll quickly discover the ease a duvet gives you in changing your designs. Duvets are cheaper and easier to clean than a comforter and don't forget, you can still enjoy the look of your comforter whenever you want.

Children's Bedding from the Puvet Company

By Sally Painter
Former Commercial and Residential Designer

Not all bedding is the same, especially if you want something that will inspire your child to make up her bed. This was the concept that CEO and founder Gidget Taylor of The Puvet Company came up with for her bedding product.

Introduction to The Puvet Company

LoveToKnow (LTK): When was The Puvet Company founded and what is the concept of The Puvet?

Gidget Taylor (GT): I officially founded The Puvet Company in 2009 as a corporation. However, its birth stemmed from a childhood dream that I had to create beautiful, multifunctional room dcor kits that the creatively inspired or the creatively challenged could easily incorporate into their rooms to create an instant make-over without a lot of fuss.

What Is a Puvet?

LTK: What are Puvets? What is the origin of the word and meaning?

GT: Puvet is a registered trademark. It derives from the words picture-pillow duvet. It is the original interactive duvet that is intended to help kids learn how to make their beds in three easy steps and create fun, interactive changes in their dcor.

LTK: Can a Puvet be used year round?

GT: Yes. The Puvet has a 100 percent cotton base. It is both cool and warm and can be used as a beautiful spread or as a cozy duvet cover for an old comforter.

What's Available

LTK: What types of fabrics are available?

GT: Currently, Puvet's design is available in 100%, 1,000 thread-count cotton. It's appliqu and picture pillows are made of various materials and textures.

LTK: What collections are available?

GT: The Happy Day collection and the Night Life collection are available for a limited time in one starter set. Our goal is to introduce 4 other collections by the end of 2011.

Puvet Different from a Duvet

LTK: How is a Puvet different from other duvets on the market? What advantages does it have over other duvets?

GT: Puvet is 1,000 thread-count cotton which is unmatched by any children's duvet in its price point. Every picture on the Puvet is either embroidered or appliqud onto the duvet. There are no printed pictures. Puvet also encompasses many tools for early elementary learning like: bright primary colors, textures for tactile development, and items that foster spatial arrangement and teach time of day. Lastly, but definitely not least, Puvet inspires kids to make their beds!

Conversion Kits

LTK: What is a conversion kit and how can it be used? When will this be available to customers?

GT: Conversion kits comprised of other detachable appliqu characters which are theme related. These pieces can be interchanged to give the Puvet a different theme. For example, a garden scene can be changed to outer space or the jungle. It was our goal to roll outtwo conversion kits per season; however, as with many other businesses, our plans have been delayed due to our current economic climate. Though we've had to place our mass roll-outs on hold, we do create certain conversion pieces on a custom bases.

LTK: Can readers find your product in retail stores or do they order from your website?

GT: Currently, Puvet is available exclusively on our website.

Teen Bedding Tips from Wake Up Frankie

Every so often, you hear a story about a young person who has the foresight to fulfill a need in the marketplace. The idea may be sparked by that individual person's desire for something they want but cannot find, or it could even be an epiphany, when one realizes that their creative idea might just be worth manifesting into something real.

The story behind Wake Up Frankie is one such story. A young teenage girl's dream of how she would like to decorate her bedroom spawned the idea for a store that would carry amazing bedding and accessories for teen girls. Wake up, Frankie, you're not dreaming anymore!

About Wake Up Frankie

Love to Know (LTK): How would you describe your business and when did it start?

Frankie: Wake Up Frankie is an online site offering bedroom dcor for teen females through early 20's. We design and manufacture our own brand - Wake Up Frankie. We cater to a wide variety of personalities, including ultra feminine "girly girl", urban chic, boho bold, rocker, retro hippie, perpetually preppy and girls who adore Paris.

Wake Up Frankie was started in 2001 by me, Frankie, then 14, and my mom, Pam. We both saw a need for bedroom dcor exclusively devoted to teen girls. At the time, we were pioneers in this category and this accounts for our immediate success.

LTK: What are some of the inspirations behind your bedding designs?

Frankie: Our bedding designs are definitely inspired by hip and cutting edge fashion, current trends, music, musicians and pop culture. I love to use bold patterns, intense colors, lots of dressmaker details and of course, my signature combination of pink and black!

Tips on Choosing Teen Bedding and Accessories

LTK: Do you have any good tips on what to look for when choosing a bedding style?

Frankie: When choosing a bedding style, most girls want to select a look that reflects her personality. The choice may also reflect the way she dresses. It's likely the "girly girl" will choose pink or turquoise damask and have a crystal hanging chandelier , while the "rocker girl" will go for our all black airbrushed guitar bedding and line the walls with tons of music posters.

Our bedding collections are designed to mix and match many of the top of the bed selections as well as the accessories. Mixing and matching will give the room a custom look and feel.

LTK: What advice can you offer on bedding accessories? Do you have any other decorating tips?

Frankie: Accessories are great complements to the bedding. Try to keep it organized, furniture placement balanced, and try to carry the look through to every detail. For instance, you might not be able to afford new furniture or new lamps - but a can of spray paint can do wonders to coordinate it to the new makeover. Some of the best rooms are created on a budget, and a can of spray paint and a glue are your best tools!

We have a link on our site for decorating tips. It offers great ideas and sources.

Buying Bedding as a Gift

LTK: Shopping for teens can be tricky. Do you have any tips on buying bedding as a gift?

Frankie: Buying bedding as a gift is a great idea. We have noticed that many moms, dads, aunts and grandparents purchase for their teens, and for the most part it seems like the teen has already pre-selected their choice. If you're are not sure which pattern to select, we offer Gift Certificates, which are always the safe way to go!

Popular Designs and Specials

LTK: What are some of your best-selling bedding collections? Do you have any new designs you would like to talk about?

Frankie: Wake Up Frankie offers over 100 exclusive and unique bedding collections. Our top selling patterns are anything damask, anything pink and black, Parisian themed and our personalized airbrushed bedding.

LTK: Do you have any coupons or specials?

Frankie: Wake Up Frankie almost always offers some kind of special deal - free shipping, two for one, or a percentage off. Customers and visitors can sign up for emails where they will be alerted to the current promotion, giveaways, contests or newest items.

LTK: Do you have a catalog and how do shoppers get one?

Frankie: We do have a catalog sign-up on Wake Up Frankie's home page. Our next mailing should be in late fall, focusing on Holiday shopping. In the meantime, we encourage our shoppers to get the most current and complete selection on Wake Up Frankie.com!

Styles for Guys

At Wake Up Frankie, teens can find amazing bedding styles that can't be found anywhere else. While the majority of the bedding styles are aimed at girls, you can also find awesome designs for guys such as the Black Light Special, Party Like a Rock Star and Have Urban Taggin' UR Name? (Personalized).

Create Your Own Style

Wake Up Frankie understands how much most teens like to create their own individual style. Unlike many stores that sell bedding collections as a bed-in-a-bag, with sheets, bed skirts, shams and throw pillows all included, everything in these collections can be purchased individually. You can create your own, totally unique look in your room and call it whaterver you want. Shopping at Wake Up Frankie allows you to explore a wide variety of custom decorating options for your bedroom.
